OSCARMAX EDM Empowers Metalworking with In-Built Engineer Technology to Drive Smart Manufacturing in India
To meet the global wave of smart manufacturing, Taiwanese electrical discharge machining (EDM) giant OSCARMAX is focusing on shortening the learning curve for operators and enabling rapid production deployment in markets like India. Ahead of its participation in the upcoming AMTEX exhibition in India, the company highlighted its dual capabilities in integrating both EDM hardware and automated system software.
This integration seamlessly connects high-performance EDM machines with robotic arms, automatic tool/electrode changers (ATC), and automated storage systems. Managed through an in-house developed control system, this setup forms a multi-station, long-duration Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) for unmanned production, significantly boosting both equipment utilization and precision.
The system also incorporates an AI-driven smart machining parameters database that automatically optimizes discharge circuits and reduces electrode wear for complex molds and difficult-to-machine materials, while offering remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.
Jason Ho, Associate Manager of OSCARMAX, pointed out that machine tool builders exist to serve end-user manufacturers. Having operated in India for over 20 years, OSCARMAX looks to the service-oriented engineering concepts seen in Taiwan’s semiconductor industry as a blueprint for its service model.
An Automation Service Model Bridging Hardware and Software Solutions
When clients invest in production equipment, these machines often remain in service on the factory floor for up to 30 years. For instance, when semiconductor giants like UMC or TSMC deploy wafer fabrication equipment globally, support teams must spend considerable time on-site adjusting the machines to local environments and integrating them with other processes. This long-term, supportive partnership relies heavily on dedicated service teams—a process highly similar to integrating automation services for machine tools.
Since the machine tool sector is a relatively niche market, and customers often use OSCARMAX equipment on a substantial scale, Ho suggests that companies investing in India focus on local demand in automotive, motorcycle, and consumer goods manufacturing as key entry points. Taiwanese manufacturers can act as supportive partners in this journey, utilizing regular engineer exchanges to speed up support for shared clients.
Ho noted that the business has moved far beyond simply selling standalone machines. Today, providers must deliver complete hardware packages and even comprehensive turn-key solutions, collaborating deeply with local supply chains from factory layout planning to final execution.
Because OSCARMAX’s EDM machines sit at the very beginning of the metal forming process, they are essential to many factories. Right from the early design stages, the user interfaces are built to be highly intuitive. Coupled with automated system services, this approach helps clients boost utilization rates while improving quality, yield, and production speeds. This allows local operators to get production up and running quickly, even if the local workforce is still developing its technical expertise.
Building Modular FMS to Realize Smart Production
When designing modern FMS setups, OSCARMAX collaborates closely with clients to redefine their workflows. The goal is to let operators and management focus entirely on securing orders and production, while the machines automatically maximize machining efficiency. This saves clients from the high costs and coordination efforts of building their own internal integration teams after purchasing equipment.
Even though every factory differs in layout, personnel, organizational structure, and specific machining processes, OSCARMAX delivers tailor-made systems through a highly modular design. This approach also solves the inventory and maintenance challenges that often arise for manufacturers and suppliers when managing highly customized setups.
Drawing on more than a decade of experience, OSCARMAX has standardized its FMS integration into a product that functions much like modular cabinetry. By setting up a central server on-site, the system acts like a multilingual engineer. It networks and centralizes data from highly automated equipment that was previously run as isolated steps by individual operators. By linking robotic arms, EDM and milling processes, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and material management, OSCARMAX creates a comprehensive metalworking solution that transforms standard machine tools into highly adaptive production units.
With major controller manufacturers like Fanuc, Siemens, and Heidenhain providing mature communication architectures, OSCARMAX "stands on the shoulders of giants". The FMS acts as a production scheduler and factory manager, bridging the flow of information and materials between machines. Operators can easily access thousands of pre-configured application modules tailored to their MES and component manufacturing needs via standard CNC systems and IPCs.
Strengthening In-House R&D to Drive Machine Intelligence
In addition to aiding day-to-day manufacturing, the next-generation EDM controllers that OSCARMAX is showcasing at AMTEX are designed to be highly intuitive and intelligent. They display clear warning alerts and error codes, which shortens downtime for maintenance and reduces the need for extensive operator training. This supports the company’s vision of a "zero training" strategy, making the systems simple for almost anyone to operate and maintain.
Distributors can also develop their own local language packs, a feature highly beneficial in multilingual, diverse regions like Southeast Asia and India. If day and night shifts feature different operators, the interface language can be switched instantly, reducing the cognitive load of learning both machine functions and a foreign language. Looking ahead to the AI era, controllers may gradually move away from traditional user interfaces (UI) or increase the use of Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs)—areas where OSCARMAX’s established in-house development team holds a strong advantage.
With internal software development, the team can optimize and customize both hardware and software in just a day or two. This in-house capability allows software development to move up to 30 times faster than competitors who outsource industrial programming. Notably, the "AI Smart EDM Machine," developed in collaboration with the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC), won a Silver Award at the 2025 Edison Awards.
Through the CPU of the self-developed Adaptable Parameters Control (APC) system, data packets are sent every 250 microseconds. The system uses AI to analyze discharge conditions in real time and automatically adjust machining parameters. This "In-Built Engineer" mode significantly reduces reliance on operator experience while improving stability and machining efficiency.
This technology is particularly valuable in regions with unstable power grids, such as parts of India. OSCARMAX's EDM machines are equipped with smart meters integrated directly into their MQTT hardware architecture. This setup helps clients calculate and report energy consumption during metalworking tasks for better energy management, while an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is provided as standard equipment.
Recently, OSCARMAX secured a major Indian public sector contract. The bid required the EDM machines to shut down safely during power failures and automatically restart to resume the stored machining program once power returned. Winning this contract was a direct result of OSCARMAX’s mastery of its own control system circuitry and core proprietary knowledge.
By combining OSCARMAX's deep understanding of EDM technology with plug-and-play simplicity, operators only need to enter basic workpiece information. The "In-Built Engineer" then monitors parameters in real time, enabling seamless machine operation. This allows manufacturers to focus less on learning machine operations and more on adding value to their products and expanding their markets. Even if staff turnover occurs, new operators can step in and run the machines immediately.
This capability is the result of OSCARMAX's more than 20 years of dedication to the Indian market, positioning the company as an ideal collaborative partner helping global manufacturers step into the smart manufacturing era.
